Which one to choose? One-size or Sized Diapers?
Which one should I buy? One-size or sized diapers?
Most of us would ask these questions before making any cloth diaper purchases. What are the pros & cons of using one-size or sized diapers (S,M,L)? Based on my experience and readings, below are my opinions:
1) The “look” of the diaper.
I still remember the moment I use one-size diaper to my 2 months daughter. This is the first time I cloth diapering my child. My first impression is that the diaper is too bulky for my tiny daughter. Sometimes it leak. I feel a little bit discourage to cloth diapering my child. (But fortunately I still cloth diapering my child until now and I happy with the decision)
For cloth diaper beginner, this is what you should expect if you’re using one-size diaper to your small child. It would look bulky to a small child especially if you have a tiny child. However one size diaper looks great on a bigger child.
On the other hand, sized diaper always looks good on your child since the cutting is design to suit the size of your child. Apart from that, sized diaper did a good job at keeping the mess contained.
2) The investment/ cost required
At first glance, start-up cost of using one size cloth diaper is smaller compared to sized diapers. One-size diaper would last from baby till potty-train. On the other hand, sized diapers would require multiple sizes to suit your baby needs as he/she grows up.
However having only 12 to 18 one-size cloth diapers with intention to recycle them through 2 or more kids might be unrealistic plan. Why?
Lifetime of a cloth diaper would depend on few factors such as your washing routine, how you dried them (line dry, dryer, etc) and the size of your diaper stash. For example, a dozen of one-size diapers that are washed every alternate day for 2 years are going to wear faster than a dozen of size S diapers. Size S diaper would be only worn until your child grows to bigger sized diapers, let say only for 8 months. If we do a simple calculation, the one-size diaper would wear twice as fast as size S diaper.
With above justification, your diaper stash should be large enough if you choose to use mainly one size diapers to extend their life. Large enough here would means you only wash a couple of times a week and really properly care for them. Thus the actual cost might be the same as sized diapers.
Our recommendation is that if you intend to recycle the diaper through 2 or more child, sized diaper would be a better choice. You would only need 2-3 dozen of size S diaper, 1-2 dozen of medium diaper and some child don’t even need size L diaper as they potty train before they grow out size M.
On the other hand, if you are having 2 or more child which is still wearing diaper, having a few one-size diapers for outings to simplify your diaper bag would be a wise choice.
3) Diapering needs of your child
Infants require changing more frequently than an older child. The need to change often starts spacing out substantially as the child get older, especially when solids are introduced. Depending on your washing routine, you may need 2-3 dozen of diapers for a newborn. An older child would require less diaper; say 1-2 dozen of diapers only. Thus it is make sense to have a separate Newborn/ Small stash of 2-3 dozen diapers and then moving up to a smaller stash of Medium diapers. This would allow families of multiple and different aged children to cycle through the sizes.
The wear on one set of one size diapers through 2 or more children is going to be quite substantial.
4) Resale value
Cloth diapering in Malaysia is evolving. There is a good market for a well taken care of used cloth diaper. Thus if you do end up with more in a particular size than you need or if you’re no longer using it and it is still in good condition, you quite possibly could get back some of your investment.
3) Functionality of the diaper
As far as the sizes and the absorbency of the insert/ doubler fit your child, both one-size and sized diapers works great for your child. If you are unsure which diaper would suit your baby best, ask seller the actual range of sizes that would fit into the diaper.

Cloth Diaper Journey
Time flies and I realised that it has been 2 years of my cloth diapering journey. I started with my second daughter when she was 2 months old. Starting with buying some imported cloth diaper from one online store and later started sewing my own cloth diaper.
During those day I would say that I started to be cloth diaper addict.. until my hubby teased me "hari ni takde citer baru pasal cloth diaper tak?" because everyday I would share my knowlegde about cloth diaper with him. This is how my cloth diapering journey started.
